African Woman
About African Woman magazine

African Woman is a women’s lifestyle magazine that reflects the complexities, joys and aspirations of the modern African woman’s life. The editorial content covers a wide range of topics, from fashion to financial advice, from regular columns giving practical advice to in-depth features on matters that affect readers’ lives.

The aim of the magazine is to inform, educate and entertain its readers, and in so doing present material that is relevant to the social, aesthetic, economic and cultural context of East Africa.

Much of the content of African Woman is of an inspirational and uplifting nature – written and pictorial images of lifestyles our readers aspire to and reports of successes achieved by African women. The publisher and her staff are very much aware of the responsibility that rests on their shoulders, to present content that is inspirational but not elitist, interesting but not sensational, and balanced and factual but not controversial.

The magazine’s headquarters is based in Kampala, Uganda, from where the first African Woman (East African Edition) was created in 2005. Contributors (writers, photographers and advertisers) are drawn from across the East African region.

In April 2009, two different issues of African Woman were published for the first time. Issue 28 is called the Ugandan Edition, and it is distributed in Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and Sudan; and Issue 1 is a new, tailor-made Kenyan Edition.

African Woman also operates an office in Nairobi, manned by a core staff and a team of freelance contributors.

Writing, photography, design and layout of both issues of African Woman meet international standards. Because the visual impact of African Woman is one of its unique selling points, paper and print quality is never compromised.

The magazine is printed in full-colour throughout, on 100 gsm art gloss, with the cover printed on 170 gsm UV varnished art gloss, and perfect bound. It comprises 116 pages, and the ideal advertising complement is 30%. Priced at USh 7,000 in Uganda and KSh 250 in Kenya, African Woman is in a viable position regarding its competitors. From Issues 29 (Uganda) and 1 (Kenya), the magazine will be published monthly.

Circulation

The current print run is 20,000 copies (and growing rapidly with the new Kenyan issue), of which the greatest proportion is sold in Uganda and Kenya. The magazine is available in supermarkets, other shops, informal traders and street vendors. Distribution to Kenya and Southern Sudan is carried out through well organised and established channels while distribution into Tanzania and Rwanda is picking up satisfactorily.

Sylvia Owori - AW Publisher

Sylvia Owori is fast becoming an East African media icon. As a leading fashion designer, owner of a range of successful clothing boutiques in Uganda and Kenya and publisher of African Woman magazine, she is well known for both her entrepreneurial skills and her creative talent.

Sylvia studied in London and her designs draw on her Ugandan roots, the African lifestyle and her extensive travels to the USA and Europe. She is regularly invited to participate in international fashion events.

In 1999 she started the first modeling agency in Uganda, Zipa Models, which is still going strong. She was instrumental in revitalizing the Miss Uganda pageant during her involvement in this event between 2001 and 2004.

In 2004, Sylvia launched her own label, Sylvia Owori, a prêt-a-porter range on sale exclusively in her stores with the same name. The items are designed with sophisticated, modern working women in mind. In 2005, she created costumes for the main characters of the film The Last King of Scotland.

African Woman magazine was launched in November 2005. It was the first high quality women's magazine to be published in the region, focusing on themes pertinent to contemporary women of East Africa, and fashion.

In April 2009, after publication of 27 issues of African Woman, a second version of the magazine, produced specially for Kenyan readers and advertisers, was launched.

Sylvia's contribution towards Uganda's development was recognised by President Museveni himself when, in June 2006, she received the Presidential Transformers Award
